The Paladin

Lawful Good

You march beneath a banner of justice, bound by oath and honor. Where law meets virtue, you stand... shield raised, sword drawn against the darkness. The realm sleeps safely because you do not.

The Paladin believes that strong institutions, enforced fairly and compassionately, are the best way to protect people and build a just society. Rules exist to serve people, and the Paladin takes seriously the duty to ensure they do. This is the archetype of the civic-minded reformer, the principled public servant, and the community organizer who works within the system because they believe the system can work for everyone.

Strengths

  • Deep sense of duty and personal responsibility
  • Willingness to build and maintain institutions that serve the common good
  • Consistency between stated values and actions
  • Ability to inspire collective action toward shared goals

Blind Spots

  • Can become rigid when rules conflict with compassion in edge cases
  • May trust institutions too much and overlook how they fail vulnerable people
  • Risk of moral certainty becoming moral superiority
  • Can struggle to accept that good intentions do not always produce good outcomes

Neighboring Archetypes

The Paladin shares the Judge's respect for order and the Samaritan's concern for others. When law and compassion come into conflict, the Paladin leans toward compassion, but not without tension. At their worst, a Paladin who prioritizes rules over people begins to drift toward the Judge; one who becomes self-righteous about their authority risks sliding toward the Tyrant.
